Improve Hand-Eye Coordination, Enhance Creativity and Achieve Inner Peace with Coloring Pages!
Coloring Pages really do improve hand-eye coordination, unblock creativity, encourage self-expression and promote relaxation! How can such a simple and inexpensive activity be so beneficial? Here is what I observed;
My Experiences with Coloring Pages for Kids and Adults
An important part of a child's growth is the development of hand-eye coordination. This is the ability to control one's eyes and use the visual input to coordinate movements of various parts of the body. Fine motor skills require precise controlled use of muscles in hands, fingers, and thumbs to perform intricate tasks.
Coloring Pages,
Mazes,
and other drawing and coloring activities aid in this development. As a teacher I had many opportunities to observe the Power of Coloring Pages in improving hand-eye coordination and more. My first experience was as a volunteer teacher of a drawing and coloring class at my daughters' elementary school. It started out as a place where stressed-out kids could go to relax for about an hour. It became so popular that soon teachers were using it as a reward! Kids of all ages, races, shapes and sizes came to see me. Some were happy, some sad, some were even mad! They all blossomed. Every single one. All I did was teach some very basic drawing and coloring techniques in a non-judgmental setting. There were only 3 rules. 1. No making fun of anyone or anyone's work. 2. Keep the noise down during an actual lesson. 3. Put the cap back on the marker before taking another one!

What happened? While having fun the kids were exercising their small motor skills and improving their hand-eye coordination. As their competence grew so did their confidence. As they concentrated to master complicated squiggles and color intricate designs their attention and energy were focused on doing something positive. Tips on using color fired up their imaginations, unblocked creativity and encouraged self-expression. Result? A roomful of happy, productive kids!
Achieve Inner Peace with Grown-up Coloring Pages?
Alright, that might be a bit over the top! I'll tell you what I experienced and let you decide.When I was pregnant with my third child I went through a stressful period. I was under doctor's orders to stay off my feet, my husband was out of town for several weeks at a time and I had two other small children who needed care. My mind was a-whirl with worries! I broke out my sketchbook and drew a fantasy picture filled with elves and fairies. This provided some relief but I draw pretty quickly so it was short-lived. I decided to color it. I got out my colored pencils and began. Colored pencils are wonderful to use on intricate drawings and to create complex blends of color.
(See Tips and Techniques for information on using colored pencils.)
What happened? Grown-ups also benefit from use and improvement of their hand-eye coordination skills as well as activities that encourage self-expression and enhance creativity. As I focused my attention on layering and blending color and coloring an intricate design, my cares dropped away. Gradually the tension in body and mind faded. Time passed quickly. When my two children came home from school I was surprised that hours had passed! I was able to greet them refreshed in body and soul. Research indicates that creating art is, in fact, therapeutic. An internet search for Art Therapy will quickly yield results on this as well as various practitioners. While I am not> a licensed Art Therapist, I can attest from personal experience that creating and expressing oneself through Art is beneficial to the spirit. As related above, and in many other instances, I have observed the positive results in both children and adults as well as having experienced them myself. Of course Coloring is only one aspect of this, but it is one that I've found to be relatively easy and accessible to all. The materials are very inexpensive - just add the desire to create and start!
