Sep 7, Time Out to Color!

Usually I'm so busy drawing new pages for this site that I don't have much time to actually color! These past couple of weekends I set the time aside to color some of my own pages, originally so that I could show completed examples on the site. As I colored I discovered anew the pleasure that experimenting with colors brings. To be truthful, I've been having such a good time coloring, I didn't do as many new drawings as I had planned - Sorry!
I intend to be more disciplined next week!

Jul 12, Coloring as Art Therapy

First off - I am not an Art Therapist, nor do I play one on TV! So any advice I give on the subject of using art as therapy (and more specifically coloring) is purely based on my own experience and the stories that others have related to me. And I have been hearing a lot of those lately. One gal wrote to me about a father with Alzheimers. One of the activities that really helped him was coloring. Another woman was laid up with an injury. Coloring kept her from going stir-crazy! A grandmother wrote to me about the pleasant hours spent coloring with her grandkids. As for myself, I personally experienced the therapeutic effects of coloring when I was pregnant and had to stay off my feet. And I employed drawing and coloring lessons with a group of children who were having difficulty in class. They were sent to me specifically because they needed some relief from the stress. Anyway, I say "Color Away"! It certainly can't hurt!

Jul 6, Create Your Life!

"Create Your Life" - I know it sounds a little dramatic, but the truth is, I believe it's the most important thing each one of us should do. I think we should look at our lives as if they were works of art. And what's more, I believe that everyone is an artist!

Now, hold on there; wait just a minute! What about the guy whose handwriting is so bad even he can't read it? Or the gal who can't draw a straight line with a ruler? And then there's the fellow who thinks a lime-green & lemon-yellow striped shirt looks fantastic with a pair of salmon slacks...ugh! Yep, them too!

Here's my philosophy; I believe Art is the physical manifestation of an individual's urge to create. I think that spark exists in every one of us as children but, sadly, some of us lose sight of our own artistic ability as we grow older.

Children have this incredible ability to create freely on so many levels. And for some time they do so without fear of being laughed at or judged. I think it is at that time that the artist within is in bloom. It manifests itself in a an infinite number of forms, as many ways as there are individuals.

Well and good, you might say, but I'm not a child - what am I supposed to do with this so-called philosophy of yours?

<c>Thank you for asking!</c>

First of all, if you have a child, or know of any children, or happen to come across one, you can allow that spark of creativity to grow by not squashing it! I wouldn't go overboard smothering their efforts with praise either; a little encouragement and acknowledgment of their efforts goes a long way without taking away their ownership. Provide them with a bit of materials and some opportunities to explore their creative urges, but don't make a huge stressful production out of it!

And second (or perhaps this should be first - whatever you think best) if you're not happy doing what you're doing or something seems to be missing in your life, remember what it was that lit your fire when you were a child. Add just a little bit of it into your daily mix. Maybe just read about it or explore some sites about it. Maybe enter into a discussion about it. Maybe take a class or two.

Find it and create it and see where you can take it. It might be a new career path or it might be something you do for yourself that adds that extra zest to life. After all, we artists are always adding a bit of detail here, another line there, or a little more color - right there!

Jun 28, Life as Art

I went to a Beauty Salon for a haircut today and found the perfect person to cut my hair. She treats a haircut like a work of art, sculpting and shaping till it's just right! Turns out she knew from a very young age that she wanted to be a hair stylist. Circumstances took her this way and that, so she didn't get to it till a little later in life, but here she was, a little bit older, but very happy to finally be doing what she felt she was meant to do.

I have a similar story, having always wanted to write and illustrate. As a child it was what I did for fun. My life's journey took me down several different paths as well, but no matter what I was doing, my image of myself was that I was an artist and a writer. I always tried to keep my hand in, bringing a little bit of my true self to each job. This website, my online art Gallery, the book being published and the new book in-the-works are my life. They are the physical manifestation of that which is essentially me. I could not imagine NOT doing this.

If you are a young person just starting out, and you have a passion for something to the degree that it defines you, then I would encourage you to find some way to pursue it as a career. It will probably be hard at first, or tedious or boring. Perhaps you would have to forgo the fun of having your own place, staying in your parent's home awhile longer so you can continue to go to school in your field, or work as an apprentice in a low-level entry position. I think it would be time well spent laying the groundwork for a lifetime of fulfillment.

And if (like me!) you're not-so-young-anymore and are feeling somewhat disenchanted or unfulfilled, think back to what it was, early on, that sparked your enthusiasm, and find a way to work some of that back into your life.

What you do with your life - that is your art.

Jun 21, Art Programs cut?

I have been hearing about art programs getting cut in schools as part of the overall belt-tightening. It reminded me that although I did have art and music in school, it was part of my daily life outside of school. My appreciation for art, in various forms, came not from school, but from home. My parents showed me, by example in their daily lives, that singing, acting, writing, drawing, were desirable forms of self-expression. Doodling and writing little stories were things I did "for fun". I never realized that I was practicing for a grown-up career or that I had found an outlet that, for me, built self-confidence and self-esteem.
Anyway, if you find your childrens' art programs have been cut, maybe it's time to find little ways to work it into their homelife.
What do you think?
