Chalk: It's Not Just for the Sidewalk

by Amy
(Virginia, USA)

My nieces and nephew love to use big fat neon colored sidewalk chalks in the driveway in the summer, but in colder months they do sidewalk art inside with black construction paper and regular colored chalk. Any color paper works as long as the chalk shows up on it. Chalk is also fairly easy to smudge to give different effects.

Coloring with Chalk
by: Lainie

In High School I remember coloring with pastel colored chalks on velvet paper - paper that literally had the texture and feel of velvet! It came in dark colors such as black, deep blue and purple. The light-colored chalk really stood out. I recall drawing a beautiful undersea picture with jellyfish and seaweed. The velvet surface made the simple drawing look very rich. Has anyone else used this paper? Is it still available somewhere?
